Day #61

It's almost midnight and I should probably start writing to you about today.
It started off with a 2 and a half hours shift at the restaurant, then I spent the rest of the day with Jess, the British girl I got to know through Gumtree and met in person last Thursday. Today was her birthday and she asked me whether I wanted to join her and her sort-of-cousin for something sweet to eat. Besides, she had to pick up her cellphone charger from a Backpackers down in Fortitude Valley and I offered to accompany her and show her a little bit of the city centre.

We set to catch the same bus, even though I would have had to get on a couple of bus stops before her. When I passed the bus stop where she was supposed to be but wasn't there, I knew we were about to get in a lot of drama, especially given that I couldn't even contact her because her phone had very little battery left.
Luckily she succeeded in calling me and we decided to meet downtown after I collected her charger in the Valley. Unfortunately, due to a misunderstanding, I wasn't able to retrieve her charger and once in Queen St Mall we had another hard time to find each other! We hadn't even started the afternoon and we had already messed up a couple of times!

Anyway, the afternoon got better. She did some shopping and then we walked a little bit around. In the markets area there was supposed to be a Vintage Market, but it was little more than 10 people selling their old clothes out of their open suitcases - disappointing. It had nothing to do with the level of organization of a Wednesday Market in that same square!!
We sat in George Square and then walked a bit around Roma Park and South Bank. There we decided to have chinese for dinner. We both got Singapore Noodles with chicken and prawns. Yummy! But we couldn't bring ourselves to finish it, furthermore we were to meet Emily, Jess' cousin, in less than an hour for dessert! Little digestive walk from South Bank to George Square and then as we had our bus at 9pm we decided not to go too far from Adelaide St once Emily joined us. We ended up in this bar/restaurant which apparently enjoys smashing or having their tea pots stolen and which despite its various dessert menu, had only Nutella Calzone filled with strawberries and extra chocolate left. We decided to get two because we weren't hungry enough to get one each. Little we knew that one would have been more than enough for the three of us!!! Starting on the second was almost painful and, though we did not finish it, I still rolled back to the bus stop, feeling as full as ever!

All in all, I had a great day and I hope Jess enjoyed her birthday as well. I feel bad my friends have to stick with me instead of sharing their special day with their loved ones, like what happened to Sabri last Valentine's Day.

Day #60

Two months. Wow. It has been a really good ride so far, but now I think I'm ready to go back to Italy.
Ah, gotcha. Of course I'm not going back, I'm not even thinking about it - I mean, it feels like I just started something here and I really want to see how it goes.

So, it is late now and tomorrow I start working at 8 again, so I'll be short, like really really short.
The other day Davina talked to me and told me not to be disappointed if I didn't get too many tips or if I felt I didn't get tipped enough for the service I provided, and I was completely taken aback by her words. I mean, does it look like I only do that for the tip? Do I only do that for the tip?
I don't think so. Of course I seek positive feedback, I mean, I work really hard to give the best service possible because I'm genuinely happy when customers are happy, but I do not need to get more money back for that, I mean, I already get paid for doing my job.
Maybe what I want the most is for my superiors to know that I was good enough, that I exceeded expectations once again. Now that I think about it, I've always been like this, seeking for approval and all - since primary school and maybe even before that, in my own house.
I probably could do without the tips if they just handed over a 50 words comment on how wonderful I was. Oh gosh, am I THAT insecure to need all that? It might also be that I just enjoy being praised for my work - yes, this is far more likely than insecurity.

Ok, I ran out of time. And you just enjoyed a delightful insight on what it is like to be one of my family members. God bless them, they've put up with me for so long, especially my sisters.
Anyway, all this babbling comes from yet another thing that happened at the restaurant - tonight: one of the customers came to me and gave me $20 tip, I thanked him of course, and as I was putting the note in our tips jar he demanded that I kept the money for myself and not share it because he was giving it to me. Now, that is not the restaurant policy, but Davina noticed the exchange and said it was all right for me to keep it in that case. I'm not saying I'm not flattered that they appreciated me that much, because I am, but I would have willingly shared it with Tunda and Amy. Maybe what I really couldn't do without was having my work aknowledged in front of the boss. Am I despicable for thinking like that? Like in Hilton, I would have appreciated a good word on the comment card they had to fill in even more than actual money, and even though I was terrified by Zafer - my DO - calling me Angel, as one of my guests suggested, I cannot deny that I was really flattered. What do you guys think? Am I completely nuts?
Now I really gotta go. Oh God, I still have to translate all of this in Italian!

Due mesi. Wow!

A domani!

Day #59

Late late late late!
I'm so late tonight and tomorrow morning I start at 8 so I better go to sleep now.

It was a good day. I got my first paycheck and couldn't stop beaming: it's much more than I expected! I have almost one entire month of rent covered! Which, by the way, is perfect since I will have to pay more if I do not find anybody to replace Claire in the month she'll be away.

Ok, now I'm going for real. I think Tony and Davina are happy with me and the job I'm doing. I'm happy as well. Hope you all are happy too. Thanks for reading - I never thank you enough! Actually I've never thanked you and we're almost two months in! I'm such a bad host - which is kind of ironic when you come to think about it.

Day #58

Today I met with Jess, one of the girls who were interested in taking Claire's place as my roommate, who eventually set for another house that would have been available sooner.
The house she's living in is less than 20 minutes walk away and we decided to meet up nonetheless because it's always good to have somebody to hang around with and as I already proved you, connections are essential! We decided to go to this little bar in Ascot along the route of the 301 bus, that's how I first noticed the place, with the second prittiest little cakes ever - first prittiest-little-cakes-ever would be at the stand next to Enzo's at the Queen St Market on Wednesdays. We got scones with raspberry jam and whipped cream, man, I don't have to tell you they were delicious! I forgot how good raspberry tasted!

She sounds great and fun and that's just too bad that she found another accomodation because I'm sure we would have gotten along, but anyway, I asked her if she minded doing some of the touristy stuff with me on our days off - she just came to Brisbane and she's still looking for a job, so technically she's always off, at least for now.
All the people I know have been in Brisbane for ages and have already visited the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and been to the other exciting places in the neighbourhood whilst I stuck mainly to the City, so I have a lot to catch up to. She agreed, so I might be posting some more interesting entries in the future and maybe some of her pictures as well. She's kind of into photography, so I might benefit from her artistic influence as well as her actual camera to take actual pictures -  as you may recollect, mine broke down in London before I had a chance to take even a single picture of John and Hank Green.

Still looking for a roommate these days, but I heard from Yooni, Claire's Korean friend, who might be interested in sharing the room with me for three or four weeks. Let's see how that goes.

Tonight I worked at the restaurant and I met Amy, the new french girl, and even though I was awful at explaining her stuff - since I'm still kind of new there and all, she was still so nice to me, complimented on my French (!) and offered to invite me next time she hangs out with her french flatmates so that I can practice even more :D She seems really sweet and nice, but as with Kyle, I really had little chance to talk to her. What stick out to me about her was her long black dredlocks - like really long - and her killer make-up - like perfect eyeliner and fake lashes my sister would kill for.

Vediamo come va a finire.

Day #57

Today was awesome.                                             Oggi è stato fantastico.
I'll show you.                                                               Vi faccio vedere.
This last picture is my favourite of the day. I wish I took this one, but unfortunately all the credit goes to Claire.
This morning Claire and I woke up around seven and by 8:20 we were on a bus driving us downtown to Central Station. There we caught a train to the Gold Coast and approximately three hours after we left our threshold, we were at Surfers Paradise Beach. Quite a long journey with a bus, a train and yet another bus, but it definitely worthed it! The weather has been glorious for the biggest part of the day, the water was cool enough to refresh us but not freeze us and the sun was so warm!! I had a great day all right!
The weather changed a little bit around two, but we stayed on the beach for another two hours taking pictures like crazy and personally, I was continuing reading My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult.
The return journey was just as long, but fully immersed in my book and without the sleepiness I felt in the morning, those three hours passed much more quickly.

Day #56

Sooo tired. Opened and closed the restaurant tonight and it's just a shame that the $30 tips I got don't have the ability to soothe the pain in my feet.
Today I went downtown with Claire to get my sore feet pedicured. Now they look pretty - despite Quasimodo - but they still hurt! The nail polish I chose was dark brown on first inspection, but changed colour a couple of times during the afternoon, so now I'm not sure whether I picked brown or dark purple.
Quasimodo is doing great, in case you were wondering. The more I wish for him to die, the more he thrives and grows strong and gross. In a couple of days I reckon he's going to be as big as my little toe. Yay -.-

Going to bed now. Tomorrow Claire and I are going to the beach and we need to get up early. I'd be jumping out of excitement if only I had any strength left to lift up from my bed.

Day #55

This has got to be the good life.
I was listening to this OneRepublic's song as I was walking back home from the restaurant this morning and realised once again how blessed I am! I mean, this cannot be all luck, someone's been taking really good care of me in the last 21 years! Just look where I am, the people I've met, the places I've visited, the books I've read, this last job when I needed it! I just want you all to know that I appreciate all this, that I don't give any of that for granted, that I'm thankful everyday, that I think about you a lot and I am happy. When you're happy like a fool, let it take you over.

So, this morning, after two hours and a half I was sent home from the restaurant because there was nothing else for me to do. I wasn't upset about having worked so little, because in that short time I got more than $20 tips, that made up for the other hour and a half I didn't work! I know for sure that $10 come from a customer with his wife with whom I stopped chatting in a quiet moment, they were really nice and thanked me - as rapresentative of the European workforce - for the wonderful service delivered in the hospitality business in Australia.

It was one of those fine shifts in which you are not too busy not to have time to do everything you need to do, but enough busy to keep you always moving and doing something - in short, what I like best.

Got pranked twice today for April Fools Day. First time on YouTube, they threatened to shut down the whole website and nearly fainted -where else could I get StarkidPotter musicals or Vlogbrothers videos?
Second time, some idiot wrote on a Hunger Games fanpage that Jennifer Lawrence was quitting the franchise, there my heart skipped a couple of beats, like literally. Oh man, I think too good of strangers for April Fools!
