Day #99

Going to sleep in the next 10 minutes because.. sleepiness.
Today I
- woke up fairly early to meet up with Jess and have breakfast at the Vanilla Pod up on Lancaster Rd. I had scones with raspberry jam and cream like last time because it's just so good. Pretty much it was the birthday breakfast I did not get on Sunday. We agree we will be back at the café in the afternoon next time, so we can get one of their sparkly cupcake - gosh, I'm such a sucker for sweets.
Credit for this pic goes to Fiver75 on TripAdvisor
- rode the bus with Jess, then she left for work and I went to the Queensland Museum in South Bank. My favourite room was probably the one about the life of sea turtles. They had beautiful plastics and walking around the room you could follow the likely ''story'' of the little turtles that hatched right next to the entrance of the room. I had to skip the last panel because it was about turtle poachers and what they do with the carapaces and - jeez, just thinking about it now gives me the creeps, so yeah, I skipped that and walked away quickly from the room. I also liked the Collectomania exposition: licence plates, pineapple themed gadgets, teapots, a model of Bilbo's hobbit hole, all collected through the years by obsessed and weird Queenslanders; the collection of butterflies, in the biodiversity section, was pretty as well, though the window about spiders was awful and I deliberately stayed clear of the one dedicated to snakes.
- had a normal day at the restaurant but got pretty good tips. I'm dreading tomorrow's 10 to 15 shift. I just hope there won't be too many people asking for coffees.

Ps. Today is Claire's birthday! Happy birthday Claire!!! We miss you!

Vado a letto tra 10 minuti perché sto crollando.
Oggi
Taken from the Queensland Museum website

Ps. Oggi è il compleanno di Claire! Tanti auguri, Claire! Ci manchi!!

Day #98

I had the day off today and with Karen we went for another little trip.
Here's a map I drew, so I wouldn't count too much on its accuracy, but still, at least it shows you where we went today.
We headed south-east this time, towards Moreton Bay. We stopped at Wellington Point, the Old Cleveland Lighthouse - took some pretty terrific pictures there that I will be uploading as soon as Karen emails them to me - and had lunch there with fish and chips, then kept driving towards Victoria Point, and as last stop, the Redland IndigiScapes Centre, which is best known for hosting koalas. I probably should say that it was best known for that, since they haven't been seeing a koala in 6 months, but yeah. It was nice even though I did not get to see any koala - we saw a lot of spider and huge spiderwebs instead. They also had plenty of different brochures on things to do in Queensland and other infos, so that was good.

In the evening, I bought dinner to Sabri and Paolo in this place down in Fortitude Valley called Harajuku Gyoza, famous for its dumplings and weird way of serving saké - the waitress screams like a mad woman as she pours the liquor into the glass to the brim. Sabri says I could have a future there - as I tend to speak loud and scream even lauder - if only I looked asian.

Going to bed now. Tomorrow I'm meeting Jess for breaky at the Vanilla Pod in Ascot. Anyone wants to join us?

Adesso vado a letto.

Day #97

Picture taken by Ashlee
I am so lucky that I got to celebrate my birthday, not once, but twice! Today at Karen's we had such a fine dinner!!! Chicken brest marinated in herbs, mash potatoes, steamed veggies and salad. Karen confessed she looked up the recipe for the passion fruit cheesecake, but goodness may, I would have never thought it had to be prepared so much in advance either. Oh well, we had red velvet cake and I can't think of anything better at the moment!!!
Karen, Ash, Casey and Alex sang me happy birthday, and even though i braced myself to blow all the candles Karen placed on top of it, I nearly turned them all off taking in breath! Oh God, still thinking about the cake. Man, was it good! Tomorrow I'm having another trip with Karen so I might get another bit! Yay!

They got me a pedicure in a beauty shop close to where they live, which is awesome, because it was about time I got my feet done again! Besides, what's not to like in a pedicure?!?
I also got a beautiful birthday card!!

After dinner we sat and watched the 80 minutes season finale of Revenge. Ash and I nearly had an heart attack twice, when the screen got black and paused for a second too long before moving onto the following scene. We also gave each other a high-five when we thought we had found out who was going to die - we're weird - and secretly rejoyced about it - and such bad people. In the meantime, I bet Casey was rolling her eyes at us with a you-guys-should-just-shut-up-and-watch-the-show expression on her face. She was right of course, if only I could watch TV like that!!!

I had such a pleasant evening! When going home, I thanked Karen also on behalf of my mom and dad. I'm sure they are as grateful as I am for the way she and her family welcomed me.

Ps. Almost forgetting! My friend Anna sent me a birthday card from Italy and I got it today!!! Such a beautiful surprise! There was a picture of us with it as well!!! Thanks Anna, here's already your birthday, by the way.. even though I'm posting this entry as 13th of May. Happy birthday to you too.

Day #96

Happy Mother's Day and happy birthday to me!
Yep, that's right! The big 21, will finally be able to enter a bar after 9pm next time I find myself in downtown Portland, OR and not be kicked out, and I mean, I wasn't even planning on getting anything to drink that time! I just wanted - wait for it - a cheesecake, for crying out loud. Whatever, feels nice to know that I can legally get drunk everywhere now. LOL

Being Mother's Day, we were pretty busy at the restaurant for both breakfast and lunch, but nothing tragic. Besides, Davina and Tunda were both there and I didn't have to make any coffee. Nice. I was released at two and got to the closest supermarket - which happens to be right across the street - to get muffins and - am I THAT predictable? - cheesecake.
So yeah, back home I had lunch on cheesecake and later had a muffin with Sabri as afternoon snack. I wish I could tell you that when Paolo brought home some cake from the function he cooked for today, I did not eat that as well, but it's my birthday and if I cannot get cake and sweets on this day, then when can I? I got sick, of course. I mean, nothing serious, I just had to wait 4 hours before I could eat or drink anything else.

With Paolo and Sabri, we went to Toombul shopping centre, where they have a cinema as well and we watched Iron Man 3, which was awesome. This was the first Iron Man movie I'd ever seen, because.. reasons, but since I enjoyed his character in the half of The Avangers movie I actually got to see - you should know that Captain America is the only Marvel Movie I've seen from beginning to end, I went rapidly through wikipedia and trailers and snippets of the previous movies to get acquainted with the story.
I wish I had Gwyneth Paltrow's abs. And legs! I mean, she's in a far better shape than I am and she's more than twice my age!!! This is what turning 21 does to me: making me think of the degradation of my body in 20 years. God, I need a good shrink. But first, I think I'll try with a good night of well deserved sleep.

Thank you all for reading, thank you for the birthday wishes and for thinking of me even for just half a minute today. Love you x

Buona Festa della Mamma! E buon compleanno a me!

Baci.

Day #95

My laptop battery is dying. And I mean for good. An ominous sign keeps appearing on my screen and hints that the computer might shut down any second and that I should really start thinking of replacing its battery.

I just got back from the restaurant. Double shift today, lunch and dinner. I liked the dinner better, first of all because it was pouring rain at lunch time and second because I am so conscious of my coffees. The other day I was preparing one and Tunda saw my hand shaking, she inquired about it and I confessed I was afraid of messing it up. Hopeless. I'm just hopeless.
At dinner, there came this couple with their teenage daughter. Couple of weeks ago father and daughter had a reservation and I thought I remembered whose name it was under. It was clear we recognized one another and this is pretty much how the conversation went like:
Father: (joking) I see you are still here!
Me: (joking back) Yes, they haven't kicked me out yet. (business like, handing out the menus) Can I get you anything to drink right away? I remember last time you had a red wine, did you like that one?
Father: You have a really good memory!
Of course I did not remember which kind of red wine they had, we have something like nine or ten on the wine list, but I decided to give it a shot and said  'I'd have a really good memory if I remembered your name was S-blahblah' and it was indeed! Not S-blahblah of course, but for the sake of the argument their family name doesn't really matter, let's say it's a popular last name. They weren't the only one shocked by my wonderful mind (:P) Man, I do have a good memory!
Truth to be told, I might remember them better than others, because I was kind of afraid of the guy, but he turned out nice in the end last time, and this time was just too pleased to even bother being anything but nice. Maybe he's more relaxed when his wife is around. Well, anyway, they did enjoy the dinner and said they'll be back.

Going to bed now. Tomorrow is going to be hell at the restaurant. I just wish the weather would be nice.

Ora vado a letto. Domani al ristorante sarà un inferno. Vorrei solo che il tempo fosse decente.

Day #94

Oh God, I did so many things today to write about it all..
This is a map that Karen made me to show me all the places we visited today. It was just the two of us, Tony was away for work. We hit the road at approximately 10-ish and were back by 5pm. Among the places we visited, Mt. Nebo, Mt. Glorious and Mt. Mee, the Somerset Dam, then we drove through Kilcoy and all its creeks, stopped in Dayboro for the uptenth coffee of the day - I've been running on coffee lately.

Then in the evening I hung out with Jess and her wild Aussie Farmers colleagues - telltale detail: this guy Des, after introducing himself started singing the rif of Young, Wild and Free. We were in West End, in this pub called The Boundary. Jess' friends are cool, it was a little bit hard for me to understand everything they said, especially if they weren't directing the conversation to me because there was just so much noise in the pub and each and everyone of them spoke English in a different accent! Irish, scottish, british, american.. I got a little bit confused, but did quite all right. I left early, around midnight, as I had to catch the CityCat to get back to Hamilton. I ran my way down from West End to South Bank, but eventually got the ferry.

Now it's late and even though I'd love to tell you more about the amazing day I had, the things I saw and the people I met, I NEED to sleep now. Tomorrow I'm starting at 10 and it's already 2AM - my bad. I took down notes anyway, so I'll tell you more tomorrow and in the next days.

ps. almost forgetting about it: Claire got her Visa granted!!! Yay!!! So happy!

Yay! Sono stra contenta!

Day #93

Even quicker post than yesterday.
Tomorrow I'm going with Karen and Tony on a one day trip, we're still making up our minds on the destinantion so I can't tell you more for the moment, and since we're leaving fairly early not true, they'll pick me up at 9:30, but still I want to go to sleep early. Besides, it's not like I did anything special today.
I had a day off and I spent it half sleeping - woke up around 11:30 - and half reading. Reading was a good distraction, otherwise I'm afraid I'd have spent the day eating! OMG. Isn't food just awesome?
Might be the right time to get a medical check and make sure I do not have any worm in my stomach enjoying my food for me.
