Day #85

OMG! I just received the most shocking piece of news: there's no Hilton anymore on the Iru Fushi Island.
I mean, there's still a resort there, but the owner of the island just sold the resort to another company and *sparks and magic* it's not a Hilton any longer. That is quite shocking, I'm sorry if I'm repeating myself, but that is the state I'm in at the current moment: utter shock.
Wow! I cannot believe it.. I used to freaking work there 1 year ago! Gosh, if that is a lot for me to take into, I can only imagine what it must mean to the Hilton employees - especially the management, they're likely to just be sent home. Period.

Moving onto another topic. Today I went downtown because it was Wednesday and there were the markets in Queen St. Mall. I got gnocchi for tomorrow night - I kind of sort of get gnocchi whenever I wish to visit at Karen's because I know everyone enjoys them there and this way I don't feel as if I'm imposing myself too much, hope they agree with me. Got some paistries for tomorrow as well, because since Sabri and Paolo decided to go on a diet - I do not know two other people who need a diet less than they do - they won't have them.
I somehow managed to buy myself a new top - but that was just $10, so it doesn't count, does it? - and I got some more postcards to send out in the next weeks.
Best thing about today was that, though I spent $50, I earned them all back in tips tonight at the restaurant! How good is that?!?

OMIODDIO!

Fantastico, no?

Day #84

Had a crazy night at the restaurant and finished my shift at 11:15PM. I got almost $70 tips though, which is extra good. I mean, that is like two pedicures and as if Davina had paid me ten dollars more per hour! Awesome.

Spent the morning and early afternoon reading Great Expectations and I'll tell you what, it's not bad at all! I'm shipping Pip and Estella like crazy, but that is just the inner fangirl in me that reaches out whenever she can. I know the characters have huge flaws, but I can't help feeling for them despite it all.
There are plenty of quotes I love and I wish the book I'm reading from was mine so that I could get a marker and highlight my favourite passages. I would have never thought I'd enjoy it this much, but I am most certainly glad I am. I'll probably check some more of Dickens' works. Any recommendations?

Day #83

I had a quiet day off today.
I Skyped with a friend I met on the Internet and was fun to eventually get to speak to him instead of just chatting and exchange book and movie recommendations.
The biggest surprise of the day came in the mail, though!! One of my friends from my hometown sent me a letter and I had no idea such a thing was coming: what a wonderful surprise that was! She also included a lovely pair of earrings for my birthday - that's still two weeks away, but I loved that she thought of it almost one month before the actual day!

I love letters and postcards. I love collecting them and re-read them after years and change. I remember when this same friend, Alessandra, sent me a postcard to the Maldives.. we never thought it possible, but she actually managed to get it to me. I still keep it as the most precious piece of mail I'd ever gotten. When I was in the Maldives I needed something I could hold on to from home and that postcard came at the right time.
Sumbliminal message: feel free to send me postcards, photographs, poems.. I don't think I'll be changing address in the next couple of months anyway, so.. what's stopping you?

Amo ricevere lettere e cartoline.

Day #82

Today I worked at the restaurant on lunch shift and let me tell you, I wouldn't have made it without Tony's help. Unlike last time, Davina didn't stay at the restaurant but went straight home, leaving me completely alone on the floor and behind the counter. It only makes sense that we had plenty of people over right at this convenient time.
As I said, God bless Tony! He served food to the tables himself when I was too busy welcoming new customers or taking orders from others, not to mention that he was really helpful as barista when four tables came one after the other and we were to serve them drinks ASAP.

A funny remark: one of the customers complimented me for taking care of all the tables and keeping a good eye on everybody's needs at the same time. At first I thought he was kidding, because I felt hopeless and completely disappointed in the service I was providing: being so busy I couldn't focus on each table the way I like to and I was afraid people might feel as if I neglected them.
So I said to him, 'Seriously? Today I'm a mess.' If he thought that was excellent service I wonder what he would say of what I call excellent service. But of course, I was flattered and I literally sighed of relief in acknowledging the fact that I might have been to harsh on myself when judging my work.

I think Davina feels bad for not giving me a day off on my birthday - you see, it will be Mother's Day, which is the Black Friday (beginning of the Christmas shopping season in US) of restaurants apparently and they cannot afford to be short of one person on the floor. I was saying, she must feel bad about it because she offered to give me a makeover (I seriously don't understand why people think I should need one, my sister was always insisting on it! Lol, probably because it's written all over my face that I have no clue about how to put eyeliner in a straight line or pluck my eyebrows in an acceptable way. Whaterver.)
I'm kind of looking forward to that, she always has perfect make-up! It'll be nice, just for a change. Even though it's going to be weird. I mean, she's still my boss.

Day #81

I've been working at the Trattoria for more than a month now and as sad as that is, today was the first time I actually managed to open the Chianti basket bottle without embarassing myself or needing any assistance.
Both Davina and Tunda tried to show me before, but I never quite got the hang on the technique till tonight - I can be pretty dumb if I want to. About time, I dare say. Turned out it wasn't difficult at all (!) of course the problem was all in my head: whenever I heard the bell calling to serve the Chianti to a table I'd hurry to be busy doing ANYTHING else and never got to practice with the bottle openers we have at the restaurants.

This morning, after breakfast shift, I went to the Hamilton library and robbed it. Just  kidding, but I did indeed check out a couple of (read: six) new books. Some of them I've never heard before, others were the inspiration to si-fi movies and last but not least, I got even a classic. I picked up Great Expectations by Charles Dickens because I was in a kind of Victorian-Age withdrawal after finishing The Infernal Devices series last week and that was the first option available. Not to mention that Great Expectations and A Tale of Two Cities are both featured in the saga, especially the latter as its love triangle is compared to that of Will, Tessa and Jem.
Anyways, I am in no way comparing the work of Ms. Clare to that of Mr. Dickens, I'm just saying that I love England in XIX Century (huge Jane Austen fan right here) and pretty much every novel I read set in that time frame has just something awesome about it. All the changes the Country went through, the industrial revolution, dress and behaviour code, social gatherings, do I need to go on?
But yeah, I'm almost 100 pages into it already and I'm liking it so far. I remember reading a passage of Bleak House in High School and being thoroughly puzzled. I couldn't have been more confused and Dickens was just describing London's fog. Oh well, I'm glad this one seems easier.

Day #80

Get ready for a useless post.
Today I
- woke up late. You know, when the bed has that perfect temperature, the pillows and mattress completely match the negative spaces of your head and body and you feel like laying under those soft blankets all your life, yep, that's why I didn't want to get up. Too bad I'm starting at 8 in the morning tomorrow.
- felt like a naughty child when Paolo scolded me (not quite literally) for not taking care of the shared places in the house like the kitchen and hallway as well as I should, that is to say vacuuming more often and cleaning the kitchen surfaces. Did I feel ashamed? Yes, I did. Would my mom be proud? No, she wouldn't. Will I work on it? Yes, I will. Let's not talk about this anymore. I hate letting people down.
- worked for just a couple of hours at the restaurant tonight because we weren't busy. Again. I'm starting not to like being sent home early anymore: it means no money at the end of the week! Hopefully tomorrow will be better, business-wise, probably it is just going to be hell for Tunda, Kyle and I.
- Skyped with a friend. You gotta love friends.

Preparatevi per un post inutile.
Oggi
Me ne sono vergognata? Certo che sì. Mia mamma sarebbe orgogliosa di me?

Day #79

Keeping it short because even when I mean to go to bed early like yesterday, I end up finishing writing at 1AM, and THAT is not early enough, even for my standards.

So, as I mentioned, I was exhausted yesterday and had to catch up on some sleep. I woke up at half past eleven this morning and it felt good. I'm actually planning on doing the same tomorrow morning!

Today was ANZAC day, that is to say, the national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand, and a public holiday for many. Not for us at the restaurant, though. But that was ok, because I worked only in the evening and - unfortunately for Tony and Davina - we weren't too busy.

I guess that's all for the day. You can all guess what I did in between waking up and going to work, and if you'd like to know, I'm really liking Eleanor & Park. It is set in 1986: tapes, comic books and first loves blooming on school buses. What can you ask for more?
