- RECAP Week 6 -

Friday, 25 October - Day #262
I spent my day off at the library. Replied some emails, got harassed by the town freak, and later spent the evening at the night markets. The usual.

Saturday, 26 October - Day #263
Today was a regular day at the vineyard. The weather was glorious, even though it could have been warmer in the morning.

Sunday, 27 October - Day #264
Wine Week is officially over!!! To celebrate, Jeff and Josie, two friends of Loretta and Charlie, invited a bunch of people -winemakers of the region- at their café for dinner. Food was excellent and the company was even better!!! Jeff gave me a Tim Winton book (he's a famous Australian novelist), the great and powerful Phillip Shaw was there (he's a really big name in the wine industry of the region and when I shook his hand I wasn't little in awe!), and so many other interesting people!!! And we had dessert!!! after a week of "fasting" from any sweets, that was what I needed! Beautiful!

Favoloso!

Monday, 28 October - Day #265
This evening I helped Charlie out in the barrel room. At dinner, we had Charlie's PA over, Leanne. We laughed a lot - might be thanks to the beautiful shiraz we were drinking. Scratch that. It was definitely the shiraz.

Chi prendo in giro? Definitivamente è stato lo shiraz!

Tuesday, 29 October - Day #266
Today we worked in the gardens: we planted lots of new veggies which unfortunately we won't be here to enjoy. It was very muddy; rain didn't help, but is sure welcome now that the little plants are in the ground.

Wednesday, 30 October - Day #267
Today we raised the canopy wires, those which had been lowered just before I got to the vineyard. In the Chardonnay block the spurs are already tall enough to do with some support. Amazing how fast Nature works in springtime!

Thursday, 31 October - Day #268
Day off. Guess where I spent it? If you guessed the library, you are correct.
I ordered the next couple of books in the Game of Thrones saga. Yay!

Giorno libero! Indovinate dove l'ho passato?
Yay!

Friday 25 October 2013

- RECAP Week 5 -

Friday, 18 October 2013 - Day #255
You may or you may not have heard of the big bushfire still burning in the Blue Mountains at this very hour. Here in Orange we are some 150km away, however there was smoke all over the place this morning and it grew thicker as the day drew on. Problem is it doesn't look like it's going to stop anytime soon.

Loretta and Charlie have been, once again, very busy with Wine Week events. To me, that meant I didn't get to spend as much time as I would have wished to in town (read 'at the library, on the internet'), so I apologize if I were supposed to answer your emails. I'll do that as soon as I have a chance.

Saturday, 19 October 2013 - Day #256
Among today's adventures, cleaning more wine glasses - seems like that's what Wine Week is all about for me - and chasing a little lost lamb up at the dam paddock. As Charlie moved the flock this afternoon, one little lamb was left behind and we had to bring it back to the others. First we had to catch it, though! It was good fun! Charlie dived on the grass and caught it by a leg: quite impressive! I got to hold it, the cute little thing, in my lap as we were driving to the other paddock!!!

Sunday, 20 October 2013 - Day #257
Today is my sister's birthday!!!! Happy birthday Simo!

At the vineyard we washed more glasses and got the job ready for tomorrow. We opened up the irrigation pipes ends to get rid of all the ants/spiders/dirt that got accumulated since last vintage.

Oggi è il compleanno di mia sorella!! Tanti auguri Simo!

Monday, 21 October 2013 - Day #258
Back to de-suckering! God, I missed that (I had to explain to Ray I was being sarcastic).
Later in the afternoon we went downtown with Loretta. At Union Bank Wine Bar throughout the Wine Week they have free wine tasting. Today it was chardonnays of the Orange region and camembert cheese. Yummy!!

Oggi abbiamo ripreso col desuckering (potare i germogli e i rametti sanguisuga).
Buonissimo!!

Tuesday, 22 October 2013 - Day #259
Internet is torturing me today! It has been raining on and off all day - which is good for the vines and the bushfires, not so much for my cellphone service. Hopefully this will get posted according to plans.
Today I helped Charlie in the barrels room. We topped up the barrels. Long story short, you do not want oxygen in your barrels, but, at the same time you can't avoid evaporation through the lists of timber, so every ten to fourteen days you top the barrels up, to make up for the empty space.

Uh! Almost forgot mentioning it: today is a month I'm in Orange!!! Time has flown!!!

Dannata lenta connessione a internet!

Wednesday, 23 October 2013 - Day #260
Another day of desuckering. In the afternoon, Loretta and I joined Charlie at the Union Bank, where a pinot noir tasting was being held.
I spent the rest of the night reading. The book I'm currently on is trash, but I just can't put it down.

Thursday, 24 October 2013 - Day #261
Today it was freezing in the vineyard. You remember when I said I'd rather work with cold wind than with flies? Yeah, today was the case, even if I might have regretted the flies a couple of times.

Friday 18 October 2013

- RECAP Week 4 -

Friday, 11 October 2013 - Day #248
Two days off in a row feel like a holiday! Tomorrow I go back to working in the vineyard, though.
Today I spent the day downtown: I visited the art gallery - just one exhibition, but a good one!; wrote a couple of postcards, did a little bit of USEFUL shopping and spent the rest of the time in the library. I even caught Glee on TV tonight!

Saturday, 12 October 2013 - Day #249
Today we worked in the gardens (we have two), weeding and preparing the soil for planting tomorrow. Excited about that! (<-- maybe I had one too many beers tonight!)
Working was hard today! It was really hot and we were digging under the midday sun.

Sunday, 13 October 2013 - Day #250
We didn't plant in the gardens today; it was far too windy to do that. Instead Loretta found us another job to do in the vineyard.
This evening, in my spare time, I started watching Game Of Thrones. Man, is it addictive!

Mamma mia, quello show è una droga!

Monday, 14 October 2013 - Day #251
Temperature dropped in the night and this morning it was freezing as we set to work in the vineyard. Luckily, Loretta called us back in the house and we sheltered there till a warmer hour.

Tuesday, 15 October 2013 - Day #252
Today Loretta volunteered Ray services and mine as wine glass polishers at the wine show that started today.
Long story short: more than 300 wine glasses, more than five hours polishing.. Never again.

Wednesday, 16 October 2013 - Day #253
Today I found out I'd rather work in the cold, with the wind blowing than be bugged by flies as I was this morning. It was horrible. Freaking flies!

Maledette mosche!

Thursday, 17 October 2013 - Day #254
Today the Wine Week started here in Orange. Loretta and Charlie will be very busy in the next 10 days or so.. As a matter of fact, this afternoon, since they would both be absent, they asked me to take care of the cellar door should anyone come to buy wine. Nobody came, as expected, but it still flatters me that they might ask me.

Friday 11 October 2013

- RECAP Week 3 -

Still at the library.
Here are some of last weeks post and pictures.

Friday, 4 October 2013 - Day #241
Today I had the day off. Loretta drove Ray and me to town. I know it's sad we spent most of the day in the library, but despite the fact that the internet turned out to be not as fast as expected, it was still good enough for general browsing and Skyping with my family.
Among other things, I got the library membership card and got Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck to read in the next couple of
days.

Saturday, 5 October 2013 - Day #242
Tonight Ben - Loretta and Charlie's eldest son - arrived to the vineyard with his friends Ty, Sam and her sister Jo, Wes and Mike. We had dinner all together, food was delicious, Charlie's wine excellent and Ty's carrot and banana cake was the perfect ending of a really pleasant dinner!

Sunday, 6 October 2013 - Day #243
Oh my.. My belly is soooo full right now! Tonight we had barbecue and we watched a the Rugby League Grand Final match. House was full of Manly Sea Eagles supporters who were a little disappointed with the result of the match, but still managed to have a great night with friends.

Omamma..

Monday, 7 October  2013 - Day #244
Oh my knees! You guys have no idea! With the irrigation pipes at shins height, I spent the last week bending to work 30-40 cm from the ground and now I can hear the joints in my knees cracking! It's not fun.
I got an ice pack on them all afternoon long.. Hopefully that'll do!

Tuesday, 8 October 2013 - Day #245
My knees are better today, thanks for asking.
This early morning, Ben, Ty and Wes left for Sydney and Ray and I set for another day in the vineyard. In the late afternoon, Loretta was heading to town for a meeting and I jumped in the pick-up so that I could visit again the public library and get new books. I'm looking forward to reading A Game of Thrones, Life of Pi and Confesions of an U
gly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire, the author of Wicked, this time re-writing Cinderella's story.

Wednesday, 9 October 2013 -  Day #246
Bottling day. Long day. Day of aching.
We finished cleaning up at midnight! Did I mention it was a long day?
I enjoyed it, though.. We rotated tasks, but what I enjoyed the most was filling up the bottles with wine. Labeling was fun as well.
Will came to give a hand, but since this late afternoon it was just the four of us. Oh God, I'm sore.

Fred, the lamb, left us today. Dan, a friend of Loretta and Charlie, came to pick him up. He will live to be an old sheep with his four little kids. I'm glad we won't have to eat him.

Giorno d'imbottigliamento oggi. Lunghissimo.

Thursday, 10 October 2013 - Day #247
I asked for a day off today. It took me some good five minutes to get out of the bed as every joint and muscle in my body was aching. It was a lovely day! I watched The Descendants, followed reading on my book, laid down in the sun, stretched my back and legs and also had time for some minor chores.

Friday 4 October 2013

- RECAP Weeks 1 and 2 -

Typing from Orange Public Library.
Okay, I had overestimated their Internet Wi-Fi, but at least I am browsing on my laptop - quite a change from my cellphone, if you ask me!
So, what if the library hotspot has painfully low speed internet connection?! And have a limit of 500 MB per session?! And takes ages to load the simplest of pages?! Still better than what I get up at the vineyard!

And this brings me to the question: are you, by any chance, already following the Australian Me facebook page? You might have noticed that I haven't been posting on here for a while.. that is because at Lofty Vineyard I can just access my Facebook and have no way of updating the actual blog. I keep posting daily entries to the facebook page, but of course they are just a couple of sentences typed from my cellphone.
Here they are in case you missed them.

Sunday, 22 September 2013 - Day #229
Typing from my room at the vineyard. I made it!
Journey by train and coach was fun - such beautiful landscapes!!! Loretta came and picked me at the station and introduced me to Charlie, her husband; Will, one of the workers and Ray, the other wwoofer. I share the room with Ray and we don't have a wardrobe, but hey, at least we have separate beds!!

Monday, 23 September 2013 - Day #230
First day of work for wwoofer number 119, that is to say, me!
I ploughed the garden this morning and in the afternoon I walked through the rows of vines disentangling the branches from the wires. I was out in the sun all day and now I'm exhausted!

Tuesday, 24 September 2013 - Day #231
A beautiful sun shone on the vineyard today. Loretta gave me one of Charlie's shirts so that I could shelter from the sun while walking through the rows like yesterday. In the morning, I vacuumed and cleaned the whole wine cellar - where the Svensons sell wine to the public. The vacuum had stripes to wear it as a backpack: I looked like one of the Ghosts Busters!!!!
We rented some movies
this afternoon and tonight we watched Star Trek Into Darkness. Benedict Cumberbatch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Benedict
Cumberbatch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wednesday, 25 September 2013 -  Day #232
This Aussie style drinking is not going to benefit my liver! Just got back from a dinner out with Loretta and Charlie. We went to this place in Orange called Union Bank: great food and nice atmosphere! I loved it and I might have one too many bottles of ale!!!
Work in the vineyard was good today in the afternoon I slept because I had little strength back from walking all afternoon in th
e sun.

Thursday, 26 September 2013 - Day #233
Crazy wind was blowing all over NSW today and we weren't spared here in Orange. Working in the vineyard was 3 times harder and I looked like an idiot with a scarf around my ears, hat and hoodie to top it all and to keep everything in its place. Loretta was nice enough to give me a job inside the house in the afternoon.

Friday, 27 September 2013 - Day #234
Today it was such a pleasant day!! Not a trace of the crazy wind we had yesterday!!! In the morning it was just beautiful!
After duty, I went with Charlie and the dogs, Rex and Tank, up to the dam to fish - Charlie put fish there so that he could fish at his leisure.
I took many beautiful pictures - the place looked gorgeous at sunset - and will update them as soon as I get into town.

Oggi è stata una giornata meravigliosa! Nessuna traccia del vento assurdo di ieri! Assolutamente fantastico!

Saturday, 28 September 2013 - Day #235
Just got back from Justin and Meg's house - on a side note, they have a really interesting house with hay bails walls!! They invited the four of us over and we had a lovely time.
Today in the vineyard I screwed up BIG TIME: we are de-suckering (that is to say removing the buds and little branches other than the two arms selected to give us grapes) and I accidentally removed some of the sm
all bits which were meant to be the new two arms for next year lay-down. Oops. Luckily, that is no major problem, but I felt so awful and even though Loretta and Charlie have been really cool about it, I couldn't help feeling pretty bad and ashamed for that.
Tomorrow is a brand new day!

Sunday, 29 September 2013 - Day #236
One week in Orange, guys!!! And I'm still here to talk about it
Jokes aside, it was a great week! This afternoon I helped Charlie out with replacing fallen or broken posts in the vineyard and HE MADE ME DRIVE THE TRUCK!!! C R A Z Y ! God, I haven't been driving in months and obviously I had the gear stick on the wrong side!!! It was so fun!
We had Charlie's sister, Joan, and her husban
d, Pete, over for dinner. We had a lovely time.

Monday, 30 September 2013 - Day #237
Today Ray and I started fixing up the irrigation pipes through the vineyard, it's a job that will take us a couple of days to finish, but looks easier than what we've been doing lately.
After duty I followed Charlie to the winery. Today he had to tap up barrels, he was nice enough to take time to explain to me what and why he was doing it and even found little tasks I could do to help him
out.

Tuesday, 1 October 2013 - Day #238
Weather was awful today. Luckily we sheltered just in time!
Sorry I haven't anything better to add, but it was a pretty uneventful day.

Wednesday, 2 October 2013 - Day #239
Today Mitch - Loretta and Charlie's younger son - and his girlfriend Alexis visited Lofty Vineyard and will stay with us for a couple of days. Oops, should I say Mitch's /fiancée/? They just announced their engagement!!!! Charlie doesn't know yet because he'll be back to Orange only tomorrow night, so you'd better keep the secret! ;)

Fino a quel momento, acqua in bocca!
;)

Thursday, 3 October 2013 - Day #240
Weather was c-razy today! It ranged from windy to sunny, passing through snow and hail at different stages.
Loretta got us to work inside, which was good, but gave us one of the worst and most useless jobs ever: sweeping the floor of The Shed. Now, the latter is, as you may well imagine, the dirtiest place in Lofty Vineyard after the gate we keep the chickens in. A very thick layer of du
st and dirt covers everything in there. After today's cleaning, said layer might have gotten slightly thinner, what I'm sure of is, we breathed half of it!
