Day #359

Last day in New Zealand - tomorrow I'm catching my flight back to Italy!!!
So excited!!!
If you had asked me a couple of days ago, I would have probably answered you I was sad for leaving the Southern Hemisphere, but may it be that I do feel it has been a year since I last saw my family and friends; the fact that I've been sick with a cold for the past couple of days and it's getting worse by the minute; that in Christchurch there's not much to do or a combination of the three, but I'm genuinely looking forward to stepping out of Malpensa Airport this Saturday morning.

This afternoon I met with Jen and Olle, the only two people from the Stray group still in ChCh. We hung out in the ''city centre'', wrote postcards, had coffee and beer together and eventually said our goodbyes. They are really cool guys and I'm glad I got to extend the Stray experience first with Yiling and Helle at the hostel, the thai dinner with the others and the afternoon with them as a closure to this wonderful Kiwi experience!

Day #358

I should have made the TPTP (Too Pissed To Post) a thing.
Quiet day in Christchurch. I visited the Canterbury Museum and what's left of the art gallery. I also bid Yiling and Helle my farewells, as they left today.

This evening at the hostel they had a free BBQ and with some European backpackers we  -

**********YEP! That is me falling asleep in the midst of the sentence. Real literature, guys!**********

Anyways. The BBQ we had was lovely and I had the best time chatting and drinking with Axel, from France, Tyler, from England, Sonia and Gregor from Germany and Rose and Tyce from the Netherlands.

Day #357

Today I'm in Christchurch!!! I had to say goodbye to a lot of cool people from the Stray bus who kept going north, but I also got to hang around with those who stopped here as well! I'm sharing the room with Yiling and Allie from my rafting team and tonight we went out for Thai food and beers with the others.
Christchurch is hard to describe: it's sad to see all the damage that the earthq
uake caused three years ago, but at the same time I think it's kinda inspiring how they re-invented spaces and places. Visited the Botanic Gardens as well and can say they have my favorite rose garden in New Zealand!!

Day #356

My Christchurch-bound journey brought me to Rangitata today. With a group of Stray friends I went rafting on the Rangitata River and it was so much fun!!! We had to follow the guide instructions through different rapids, but we managed to stay on the raft and don't flip it! Don't get me wrong, it was a wet business, but the weather was just perfect for a day out!!! We ended up jumping off a 9m cliff, as well!!!! So fun!!!

Day #355

Blogging from the feet of Mt. Cook.
Today I am exhausted. This morning we were supposed to leave very early, so I didn't get much sleep. Journey brought us north, under the Southern Alpes.
After checking in at the hostel, we went for a walk to Hookers Lake, which was created by the retreat of the glacier. On the way back from the hike, it started to pour down on us and we all got soake
d - the cold wind that was blowing didn't help either.
Back at the hostel, a hot sauna was awaiting me, though, so the day ended in a great way, despite the tragic afternoon.

Day #354

Today was a long day!! But I got to see sea lions, dolphins and penguins in the wild, which was pretty cool.
We drove back to Queenstown, and tomorrow we're leaving again. Tonight with the Stray group we hit a couple of pubs, first one of the night was an ice bar!!! Temperature was -8*C and they gave us boots, jackets and gloves. Drinks were served in ice glasses and there were all sorts
of sculptures!!!! Too cool!!

Pazzesco!!

Day #353

Had an early start with a morning hike up to Key Summit. Weather was even worse than yesterday, if possible, and that meant no view from the top, but at least it wasn't a hard climb and I'm glad I did some excercise.

The bus drove us to Invercargill and The Bluff in the afternoon. These are the southernmost points in New Zealand and - possibly - the southern emisphere (not counting the South Pole, obviously).
The weather turned instantly around as soon as we left the summit, which was annoying but at least we got to enjoy the Mirror Lakes and Monkey Island on the way.

Day #352

Got on another Stray bus this morning. From Queenstown we headed off to Te Anau and Milford Sound. Weather was bad, I won't lie, but the company is awesome and we still managed to get cool pictures and spot some sea lions.
We spent the night in Gunn's Camp, with the electricity turned off at 10pm and little else to do but go to bed. To be fair, the managers' kids organized a fireworks sho
w for us, which was cute, but then we went to bed.

Day #351

I hate to be this meteoropathic, but the weather kind of sucked today and the only highlight of my day was the brilliant third season of Sherlock.
I love Benedict Cumberbatch.
He's one of the reasons I'll die an old sulking spinster.
He and Ed Sheeran. His ''I See Fire'' got me through a tough day.

Day #350

I might have messed up big time with the SD card of my camera today, so I need to wait to be back home and have my dad to fix it before posting any nice picture. That's a pity because today I hiked up to the Skyline Gondola with Sarah and Lisa, two girls from Zimbabwe I met here at the hostel.
It was a really nice walk, weather has been glorious once again and the view from up there was just spectacular!!! Here's a snippet!
Pretty neat, uh?
On the way down I was alone because Sarah and Lisa kept their climb up to the top and I didn't have neither boots nor a proper backpack. Yes, I was hiking with my handbag. Somehow, ended up in the middle of a mountain bike freestyle ground and had to ask for directions to some bikers because I had no idea how to get out of there.
I thought my adventures were done for the day, but literally 200 metres before the end of the trail I almost twisted my ankle and fell on my knee, bruising it. Yay!

In the afternoon I went to the movies and watched The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Now, it was a nice movie BUT 90% of it was made up and not at all based off the book. I mean, I love Orlando Bloom and all, but his character isn't even mentioned and he gets a whole storyline with a love interest, a bossy father and very weird contact lenses. My reaction to the most creative new bits is well summed up by the expression WTAF.

Carino, no?

Day #349

Very super quick post because it's 2AM and I've agreed two meet two girls tomorrow at breakfast to go hiking together.

Today I flew in Queenstown.
Flight was absolutely stunning! I swear, I've never seen anything as magnificent as the Southern Island Alpes from a plane! They go on FOREVER, such a difference from home. Truth to be told, though, I caught a breath as I saw the peaks covered in snow: it has been so long since I last saw one!

Queenstown itself is so much more I'd ever hoped it'd be! But I really gotta go now! Will update the previous entry posts with pictures soon!!!

Day #344

Where to start?! I have a gift for picking the less suitable shoes ever. That's how I came to my morning hike wearing flip flops instead of my trainers.
At lunch, I got to know Syrvain and Aiden, a French and an American guy, who are staying at the hostel. We had a pretty long chat which was very interesting.
In the afternoon I met with Mitch, this Australian guy (yet another one! I'm on
fire, guys!) I first met last night at a bar. He was playing his guitar on the beach with two locals we met yesterday at the club, Ray Ray and T. It was good fun, Ray has a gorgeous R&B voice and T is very friendly. I suspect him to be a drug dealer, though. Ahahah the World is pretty weird.

Day #343

Hi there!!! I'm up in Paihia, on the Bay of Islands, and this place already looks like it's going to be one of a kind.
Today I joined a Stray bus tour with many other backpackers. We drove from Auckland and, on the way, we stopped at a wild birds reserve, where they treat injured animals. Between the cool thing we've seen, an albatross and a kiwi, which we also petted!!! Very cute!
In the evening, I hung out with a German lady from my dorm for some beers and met some funny locals.

Ehila!

Day #342

It's 7PM here in Auckland. I don't even know where the day has gone! Oh well, my plan for today was getting a much deserved 12hrs sleep, anyway. Last night was a long one, but staying awake proved to be easier than I thought it'd be. On the plane, as soon as I closed my eyes, dreams of waves, speed and balance washed over me. I've never felt quite so mystic - I must have been REALLY tired.

Day #341

I'm pretty sure what I'm doing at the moment is borderline between illegal and very irrespective behaviour. I'm currently sitting at the International Airport in Melbourne - been sitting there for the past six hours, truly - on one of those wanna-be-comfy massaging chairs, that sometimes you see in airport lounges or shopping malls, without actually using the massaging part of it but thoroughly exploiting the leathery ass-dynamic half of the deal. Do I feel guilty about it? I probably would, if the only available socket weren't right here where the set of chairs is powered!
This is how I came to be defending my spot for the past few hours. Can you believe that I couldn't find any other open socket on the whole departure floor? I don't know what they expect our laptops to run on!

Okay, I am totally diverging from the topic of today's post; but bear with me, I've been awake for the past 21 hours!

So, today I had my last surfing lesson and it was, easily, the best one yet! We had two of the instructors we had the previous days, Jimbo and Jackson, who already knew how badly I sucked at it. Imagine everyone's surprise when I actually managed to ride a wave! (Spoiler alert: I was the most surprised.) I don't know HOW I did that, I guess the instincts just clicked, but I do know that THAT WAS THE COOLEST THING EVER!!!!
I was so happy with myself, afterwards, that even if nobody was watching to acknowledge what I did, I was floating with happiness and giggling like a little girl! I wasn't a desperate case, after all!
As the day went on, it only got better! I swear, I couldn't leave Australia in a better way!

Oh, yes. I'm at the airport because in some 5 hours I'll be flying to New Zealand. My Australian adventure has come to its end and I have this thing in my belly that makes me feel sad, and anxious, and grateful, and excited, and more and more, all at the same time.

This has been a wonderful year for me, with its ups and downs, naturally; mostly, though, I have just a lot and many people on my path to be grateful for.
So, thank you!
Thank you for when you smiled back,
for when you shared your story,
for that time you had me under your roof,
for what you taught me,
for when you listened,
for your book recommendation,
for the toast with expensive French Champagne,
for when you were close
and when you weren't.

And from Australia, in its last gift to me of theese three splendid days of surfing, I will take home two things: the Ocean, in my heart and red soil, under my feet.
(That's just for the sake of being poetic. Since most of the time I've been going barefoot, the red soil is more under my toenails than anywhere else, but that doesn't sound just as good. Sounds a little gross, to be honest.)
