Day #207

I'm waiting for the washing machine to finish. Tomorrow here in Australia we celebrate Father's Day and at the restaurant is going to be Doomsday. Kyle and Manu (Emmanuel, the French guy) are starting at 8am and I'll join them at 9am. I know it's not too early, but I like to have my time and don't rush it so I'll probably wake up around 7 anyway. I usually start getting ready two hours before my shift begins, so that if I have some spare time I can read, eat or take a short nap.

Tonight we were busy but with the three of us on the floor and Manu to help us we managed all right more or less. It didn't feel like a Saturday to me, though. Probably because, once again, I had the whole morning and biggest part of the afternoon off.
I also told Davina officially that my last working day is going to be Sep the 20th. As Loretta, the owner of the vineyard I'll be wwoofing at, answered to my email and told me I could start that week, this morning I booked my flight and train ticket as well as the hostel for the night of the 21st, as I mentioned I would do a couple of days ago.

I also got my taxes back today, you may remember I lodged my tax return a couple of weeks ago. Nice. Three hundred bucks on my account, just like that!

Day #206

Does anybody feel like writing instead of me? It's 20 past midnight and I am kind of feeling the tiredness of the day upon me.

This morning I took my time to have breakfast and do some chores, but then I spent most of my time reading - I have started A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. I sit in the shades in our backyard and it feels as if I am on holiday! Awesome.

Tonight at the restaurant it was quiet. Mr. Sheperd and his wife came to the restaurant and as I told him I'm about to leave to New South Wales, he said I should call him by his first name for the next couple of weeks. WOW! Don't know how you feel about it, but if you only knew him, you'd know that this is a BIG deal!!!

ps. Yesterday I had the best night out ever! Show was incredible, the actors were amazing and I was completely blown away by the adaptation and acting! Night got even cooler when Nathanael, who's the Art Editor for one of the State papers, introduced me to the cast and invited me to join them for drinks after the show! I got to talk to pretty much everybody who was on stage that night and you might well imagine how excited I was! A fangirl through and through! I even got them to sign my program!!! And they were so nice, and humble and down to Earth and really really nice.

Day #205

Nathanael is coming to pick me up in less than half an hour. We're going to the QPAC Theatre in Southbank to watch Tequila Mockingbird, the transposition of To Kill a Mockingbird in an Australian context. I'm so looking forward to it!!! :D
Nathanael viene a prendermi in meno di mezzora. Andiamo al QPAC Theatre in Southbank a vedere Tequila Mockingbird, una trasposizione de Il Buio Oltre la Siepe in un contesto australiano. Non vedo l'ora!! :D

Day #204

Had a really nice day at the markets today! I do love spending my time there and today it was even better than usual because I was earning money doing one of the things I like best: being nice to people. :D

Enzo, somehow, got me some gelato, eggplant, zucchini, mango, macarons and pasta for free. I have food for at least a week! AWESOME. I love food.

So, I don't know whether you are interested or not, but a couple of days ago, filming started for this movie, based on one of my favourite books written by one of my favourite authors, called The Fault in Our Stars. Said author is also a vlogger on YouTube, a tumbler, has a Twitter and a Facebook page where he keeps his readers up to date on what's happening on set with pictures, videos and blog entries. Saying I'm freaking out whenever there's a new update is an understatement: I'm SO excited for this movie I can't even.

Day #203

Geesh, tomorrow I have to wake up at the break of dawn to go work at the markets in Queen St Mall, so the following will be a very short and quick post.

Today was fine.

Okay, just kidding.. It'll be a little bit longer than that.
Yesterday I asked Marco for the contact number of the people with whom he did his three months of woofing [quick reminder. woofing : farms = au-pair : nanny] and today I called Loretta. She has not a single drop of italian blood in her veins, despite her name. She and her husband are owners of a vineyard in Orange, New South Wales. Marco said he had a great time there and learnt a lot.

I just spoke to her over the phone, but she sounds really nice. We agreed I could start on September 23rd. What will happen then is that Sep 20th is going to be my last working day at the Trattoria - which is fair if you consider I was first tried there on March 19th; on the 21st I will fly to Sydney in the evening - cheapest flight - and stay overnight at the same hostel as last time; on the 22nd I will catch a train to Orange - some five hours Westward - and hopefully by the following day I'll be well rested and ready for the new adventure.

Day #202

As any other Monday, today it was my turn to clean the unit and that's what I did in the morning.

In the early afternoon I headed to the movies to watch The Mortal Instruments - City of Bones. I enjoyed the book which is based on and wanted to check it out. It wasn't too bad till the last 20 minutes when they tried to follow the book but ended changing more than what they saved.. Oh well.. guess you can't have it all, can you? I was really happy, though, they kept some of the best quotes!

I had dinner with Paolo, Marco and Alberto and later we were joined by Sabri, who came back from work, Luca, yet-the-umpteenth-Claire (who's not Italian) with yet-another-Luca and their son Antonio. Tomorrow is Antonio's first birthday and as Paolo was Luca's best man and Antonio's godfather, they came to the unit to celebrate.

Tonight I finally bought my ticket to New Zealand! I'm leaving on January 13th from Melbourne. I also had a look into moving around NZ and think I will book my flights tomorrow...

Day #201

Today with Sabri, Paolo, Marti and Luca I went to Burleigh Heads, on the Gold Coast.
Luca came to pick us up in the morning and in little short than one hour we'd arrived. It was a glorious day and I swam in the ocean twice :D Water was chilly at first, but then, once you got used to it, it was really pleasant.

Of course we sunbathed, but since it's wintertime - let that sink in - we didn't get too tanned. Or at least, I'm still waiting for the colour to show. On a positive note, we did not get a sunburn either.

In the early afternoon, we also had a little walk on the coastline and on a footpath that took us to a quiet and sheltered bay with crystal clear water! Beautiful to behold, see for yourself!!

We got back fairly early because the day in the sun tired us all and once back in Hamilton, we had Marti over for dinner. Since she's the certified chef among us, we let her pick the menu and cook it as well. We had grilled green prawns, salad and soft cheese to spread on salty crackers. For dessert we had chocolate icecream and between Paolo and I, we got through half of the box - okay, it was mainly me, but whatever! I did not get a huge burger for lunch as these guys did - I wanted to enjoy the water as much as possible, so I decided to have a really light lunch and go back to the ocean a second time! It was worth it!!!

Crazy Australian boys doing crazy stunts.

Day #200

I swear I'm not this bad at keeping promises IRL. I know I said I'd update yesterday blog post today, but fact is, I woke up at half past twelve this morning afternoon and after that I just had time to eat lunch and get everything ready for work. Sorry.

Not much to say about today since I spent half of the time in my bed, fast asleep.
Mr. and Mrs. B. came at the restaurant with their kids and when they asked me whether I had already gotten permanent residency, I explained them things were slightly more complicated than that and that in approximately one month I would leave my job at the Trattoria to go working in a farm. Kyle told me that as soon as I left the table after dropping this piece of information, one of the two boys, don't know whether it was Dave or John, said that coming to the restaurant won't be the same anymore once I'm gone. Awwwww can I just melt on the spot?!?! Those kids are, like, the cutest, most polite children I've ever met! I'm gonna miss them too!
As any other night, they gave me a really nice tip, but tonight I lost it in taking out my notepad from my apron pocket. It's a shame - that whomever picked it up didn't do the right thing, but kept it for themselves, but it's just money. There are worse things to lose: your hand, a friend, hope.

All in all, it was a good night! And tomorrow I have the day off!!! Yay! Going to the seaside with Sabri and Paolo!!!  Marco and Luca might be coming as well, not really sure about who's joining us..

Day #199

Will update tomorrow morning. It's late and between the wine tasting I went to this afternoon and the drinks Justin and Nathanael bought me after duty, well, I could do with some sleeping!

Day #198

Today at work was crap. It was one of those days no matter what you do, somehow you'll end up pissing off a certain already very pissed boss of yours.
Oh well, I survived it.

Tonight I passed by Claire's place and helped her sort out what to bring tomorrow to Ayers Rock. Yes, she'll be leaving tomorrow morning, outback-bound, for five days. When I left her place at midnight she still hadn't closed her luggage, taken a shower nor shaved.. Let's say she ended up talking with Rossella and me, one of Claire's flatmates, for longer than she would have expected. Oh well, she has another 5 hours before the taxi pulls down outside her house.

Day #197

Today I visited Enzo at the markets. Sabri wasn't there because she had to work at the University, where she usually works the rest of the week, and Alberto was replacing her.
Enzo was his usual self, always trying to piss off the people who work alongside him in any way possible and I'd say he rather managed it.
I've always thought Albi was a fun guy to be around with, but this morning kind of changed my mind.. I mean, he might not be the person I thought him to be. He definitely said something I'm not at all pleased about, but again, probably he meant it to bug Enzo, even though he ended up being unkind to me.
When Enzo said I was his favourite one to work with, Albi said that he saw his point since I was working at the stand for free. As if that was the best thing I could offer! My ''voluntary work''!!! Now, a) when I'm working at the markets, from 7am to 6pm, I do get paid b) what I usually do every Wednesday at the markets is helping Enzo and Sabrina out because I ENJOY it, because I like being helpful to people that are nice to me and in general because I love the markets - there's food everywhere!!!!!!!!!! - and because somehow Enzo always finds a way to thank me [see the beautiful flowers I got a couple of weeks ago or the countless bags of pasta] c) is it just me or did he just value my working for free more than my being nice to be around with, a hard worker and actually good at what I do?! Because, I mean, I would have thought of these reasons to pick me among others first..
Well, either way, it wasn't a nice thing to say to either of us, at all!!! And it's not his place to say who is okay for me to help for free and who is not, as I did the same with him a couple of weeks ago when he asked for my help to translate some formal emails and didn't ask anything in return!

But then again, a little later, this French couple came up to the stand and I started speaking French with them and explaining to them how Enzo's fresh pasta was supposed to be stored and cooked and I heard in the background Enzo telling Albi something along the line of 'Now, THAT is why I like her best' and then added something else I couldn't hear because I was too focused on not screwing up with my French. I think that shut him up anyway because I didn't hear him say anything more on the subject. Well, serves him right! I mean I am SO MUCH MORE than cheap. SO. MUCH. MORE.

Speaking of which, I got proposed today. Twice.
First time was Enzo. ahahha But he actually did that on his son's behalf.. hahaha - I've never even seen the guy! What he meant, was that he'd love to have me as daughter-in-law, which doesn't hurt to hear. Apparently somebody appreciates me for my being myself.
On a side note, I think Enzo gets me for real. Like, when I was speaking of the travels I plan to do in January, especially visiting New Zealand and the landscapes that served as set to the LOTR movie trilogy, Albi was rolling his eyes mouthing 'Nerd', whilst he said that if I weren't interested in those kind of things, I wouldn't probably be me.. I'd be someone else. And to tell you the truth, I quite like being me, despite being awkward sometimes and weird most of the time.

Second time I got proposed was at work.
Obviously, our regulars have realized we've been trying out new staff lately and they know that means somebody will be leaving soon. It's a pain and a joy, knowing they feel a little melancholic already when I tell them it's me who's going.. I'd love to stay as well, as most of our regulars are really nice people whom I've been chatting with for the last 5 months, but a girl has to do what she's gotta do. And this one needs to go and work in a farm for three months.
So yeah, as I was saying, I was speaking with Nathanael and Davina and the subject came up and she said to me 'You should get married' and he said 'Yeah, let's get married! We'll just have to pretend we've been living together and knowing each other for the past two years'. Now, before you get your hopes up on a possible love-story here, you should know that Nathanael is very much gay and very much happy about it. Sorry to let you down. But still, it was nice of him to even suggest it! :D I do love and care for my customers more than I should, I'm going to get so emotional when the time of farewells comes.

Today I was training a new guy, his name is Emmanuel and he's French. I practiced some more with him as we were polishing glasses and cutlery. He's really good looking, just thought you might want to know. Oh, and he's been to New Zealand to check out, among other things, the landscape as well!

Abbiate pietà di me!

MOLTO. DI. PIU'.

Day #196

Don't ask me a blog entry tonight.
I am sooooo tired and sleepy. I wonder why, though.. it's not like I don't sleep at all at night, on the contrary! I wish I had two days off in a row: one to do absolutely nothing, just sleep and think of nothing else; the second one to get shit done.

Today I went to Zara, the beautician I've been to already a couple of times. She's pregnant and due in one month, so this was the last chance I had to get waxed at her saloon and I seized it.

Work was fine, quite busy compared to a standard Tuesday night and definitely busier than last week! There was just this one b****, to whom I'd have shoveled broccoli soup down her throat - okay, those were my hormones speaking. Been on a rollercoaster since I got my period yesterday.

Off to bed now. This week won't be too easy on me either.. I'll just have Sunday off, then working every day - which is more than what I could have said about last week, anyway! Can't really complain though, last week I did some 34 hours and my salary today was very welcome!

Mi chiedo come mai, però..

Ora vado a letto. :D

Day #195

Still alive.. just taking my time to write Sunday blog post.

Today I returned the wig and spent the early afternoon in Southbank sunbathing.
I also bought a new perfume and some bathing suit shorts. I can't afford to visit the City when shops are open, I always end up spending $50 bucks or more per trip!

Day #193

I can't believe this! It's already 1AM and I still haven't started writing anything! D:

I wanted to write a highly inspirational and deeply moving piece on how grateful I am for everything that's happening in my life, but I guess, given the late hour, we'll have to do without.

Just so you know, I'm not immune to disappointment.
I thought I was upset today, about working too much, about small misunderstandings on the workplace, about being used..
It wasn't pleasant. But then, I took a 'mental' step back and analyzed my situation: I'm healthy, I have a job, I have a roof on my head and food everyday on my table. I have a loving family waiting for me back home, the most awesome friends in the world and the people I've met since I came to Australia have been nothing but nice and kind to me. I love my colleagues, I think we make a great team and my bosses are really good people.
Realizing all this gave me peace to the mind and helped me finish my duty with renewed strengths.

I should remind myself of how lucky I am more often. Helps putting everything into perspective, you know. Who am I to complain, really? I should be ashamed of even thinking of something as stupid as that!

Aiuta a mettere tutto in prospettiva, sapete.

Day #192

I'll be quick because my eyelids are dropping and it gets harder and harder to keep my eyes open.

Quick update: next Monday is Paolo's birthday, and before that, on Saturday, it's Mitsu's. They're having a costume party at our unit on Sunday night. Yesterday I begged Tunda to swap shift with me, so that I could go to the party and she was nice enough to agree - so, yay! I will have Sunday night off!!! :D

This morning I went downtown to this Costume Hire place, where I got a wig and the final touch for my costume. I'm not going to spoil you the surprise, though. I'm sure we'll take an awful amount of pictures that night, so you'll see plenty of it.
Just so you know, I would have loved to dress up as Hermione Granger or Katniss Everdeen, but knowing the guests, I'm afraid hardly no one would have known those characters. I decided to go for somebody who's been around a little while longer - that's what you gotta do when you hang out with people who are more than just a couple of years older than you.

Today at the restaurant we were crazy busy, thank Goodness the runner on trial, Daniela, this Colombian girl, proved to be quick, smart and a fast learner. I can safely say that a) she's been the best runner we've tried out so far b) she did far better than I did on my first weekend night on trial.

Day #191

You know when older and wiser people than you tell you not to postpone to tomorrow what you can do today? They have a point.

Yesterday (yes, the date of this post says Aug 15th, but I'm writing this entry on Aug 16th, so humor me) I had a little bit too much to drink and came home from Claire's pretty late, but probably I would have managed to write just a couple of lines on our Girls' Night In. Instead, I find myself doing that today, after a veeeeeery long shift at the restaurant and just as tired.

Bottom line: if you think you can manage to do it today, then do it today!

At the restaurant, the afternoon shift was pretty boring. Had close to nobody for lunch and I served no more than 5 coffees throughout the afternoon. Basically, what I did was coming up with things to do: I polished glasses, cutlery, shelves, replaced the water for the flowers, polished some more, prepared the candles for the evening..

As Claire wasn't feeling good, we decided to skip the Cloudland and spend a quite night in. We bought some beef steaks and I had zucchini, that needed to be used, in the fridge. We also indulged in desserts, getting ourselves a Viennetta. On our way back to Claire's unit, we stopped at the bottle shop and got a bottle of Chardonnay to wash down supper.
Dinner was delicious, wine was all right but the best touch was the Viennetta! I hadn't had one in years!
As we ate, we watched Moulin Rouge. Man, that movie is good!!!!! I sang along pretty much every song.
By the end of the night, we had finished both the bottle of wine and the Viennetta. Just the two of us. And that's how I decided not to post anything yesterday night but do it today. BIG. MISTAKE.

Day #190

This morning I had breakfast with Jess at the Pancake Manor. She's leaving this Friday morning to Cairns and this was the last time we would see each other in a while - in Brisbane, at least.
When it was time to say goodbye I was kind of sad, she's been a constant to me in my stay, meeting up weekly for catching up and eating sweets. Besides, she's such a sweet girl and a fun person to hang out with: I'm sure gonna miss her! But hey, she'll still be in Australia for a while! I might have some days off in two weeks and I've never visited Cairns, up north in Queensland, so we'll see..

Work was - well, let me spend a couple of words on that topic.
Today was Ekka Day as I mentioned you yesterday. At the Eagle Farm racecourse, at the top end of Racecourse Rd, they had many and quite important races today. People in these occasions enjoy dressing up in fancy clothes and sneaking in alcohol so that they can get wasted while ''watching'' the races and then go out and get even more so on the streets. You can imagine the state of these people as they came out from the racecourse, when most of them, on the bus from the CBD to Hamilton at noon, were already as drunk as f***.
While setting the restaurant I tried not to make eye contact with anyone walking on the footpath but of course, once they actually step into the restaurant and ask to be sat you can't really pretend you don't see them. We ended up serving tab water and plain bruschettas and garlic bread to most of our customers tonight. Not exactly the business I had in mind when I came to work today.
When Davina told me I could finish at 7:30 because I was unnecessary, I was more than glad to go. I was already fed up with dealing with this kind of customers.

For the sake of the argument, I'd like to point out that a) I'm not like that when I'm pissed and b) I was never drunk at 4:30 in the afternoon.

ps. Today I also bought a hard cover for my cellphone because I might - how to put it? - have dropped it once or twice. Okay, it was twice, but I've been more careful after that. The thing costed me $20!!! Oh well, I guess you have to pay sometimes.
pps. Today was also my mom's birthday and I Skyped with my family. I can hardly believe how fast my little sister is growing up! I am afraid I won't be able to recognize her when I come back!

Posso tradurre prossimamente? è la una meno venti e ho un po' di sonno..
Grazie per la comprensione :)

Day #189

This morning I decided to sunbathe while reading in my backyard. I put on my bikini and shorts and set in the sunlight for a little longer than one hour.
BIG MISTAKE.

No, I mean, that was just something I wrote to add a little bit of drama to this entry.

Truth is, the weather was glorious, the sun was hot and I might have accidentally got a sunburn.
On my tits.
Because I'm a genius.
It's not too bad, though.. just a little bit red and sore. I'm already applying tons of hydrating cream well, who cares if it's a hand cream?! It's Aloe Vera, it's refreshing and it's meant to help re-hydrate the skin.. sounds perfect to me!

Then this afternoon, after a cool shower, I took a nap, because that's just the effect that sunbathing as on me: it wears me out completely. Just before work, I met up with Claire for a coffee as we had both been really busy over the past weekend and needed to catch up.
We expected the restaurant to be packed, as tomorrow is Ekka Day and a public holiday here in Brisbane, but it was nearly dead and Kyle, who was supposed to work alongside with me tonight, got sent off at 7PM. Not that I had a worse fate, by 9PM we had closed the whole thing and I was on my way back home.
Despite it being public holiday, I will be working tomorrow night as well. Hopefully it's going to be a nice evening business-wise... fingers-crossed!

GRANDISSIMO ERRORE.

Ahaha No, scherzo!

Day #188

Monday off.
This afternoon I was to go to IKEA with Alberto and Mitsu, so I woke up fairly early and cleaned my share of the unit in order to have the rest of the day available. As they asked for a rain check later in the morning, I found myself with plenty of time to spare after noon.

That's when I decided to challenge myself with some cooking and went out to get some mince meat at Coles to prepare bolognese sauce. I can't tell you how proud I am I managed to do it all on my own and have it turn out pretty tasty too :D Even Paolo said it came out very nicely! On a side note, both he and Sabri thought I was sick since I spent the afternoon cooking. So unlike me indeed!!!
The thing is, cooking takes time and you know very well that I'd rather spend that time reading, on the Internet or fangirling. Not saying I regret having three serves of bolognese sauce in the freezer, I guess it always comes down to choices and balance in the end. Let's say I'm glad I tried something different today. I wouldn't have been able to do it another day this week and this way I proved to myself and mostly to my skeptic friends I can do it. I know bolognese sauce it's not a stuffed duck or a chocolate soufflé but yeah, just let me enjoy the moment.

Day #187

Super quick post because my body needs sleep.
Today at work was all right, nothing special.. Next week is going to be Hell, though. I will be working everyday, Tuesday through Sunday, with a couple of double shifts during the weekend. It's going to be hard.

This afternoon with Sabri and Paolo I went to the Powerhouse for drinks. Alberto came as well and together with him, Marco - yet another friend of Sabri and Paolo. Alberto was offered money for one of his bracelets from a guy sitting on a table opposite ours, and he asked for $70. We all agreed he should have asked for more, but oh well.. He got seventy bucks on the spot, just like that, without working his ass off for it, so not bad at all.
Once home we had pasta together and we played some card games - it wasn't as fun as last time, maybe because we weren't as wasted, or maybe because we were more tired this time.. I, for sure, was more tired! We had a nice time, anyway. Martina came along later and joined us.

Now I'm off to bed. Sorry for being extra boring.

Buttali via!

Day #186

Sorry guys but today I'm not writing much. Yesterday I ended up going to bed late, because - the Internet, and this morning I woke up /late/ and with a start at 7:30 when my shift started at 8!!!
I jogged to the restaurant and got there in time, but I'm planning to take my time tomorrow morning, so 'Hasta la vista!'

This afternoon I also lodged my tax return, so if everything goes right, in a little longer than two weeks I should have $300 back. Not much, but better than a kick in the a**, don't you think?

Friday 9 August 2013

Day #185

Quick post as tomorrow my shift starts at 8AM.
This morning I had coffees with Sabri and Claire at the French Patisserie on Racecourse Rd, Le Bon Choix. Yes, it's the place I applied for a job and didn't even get called back. Oh well, their loss.

Work was okay.. we weren't busy at all for a Friday night. I wonder..
I found out something shocking at work today! Sharda, the indian girl working in the kitchen, has resigned and left suddenly. That's sad.. I didn't even get to say goodbye. She was nice, I liked her.

ps. You can go back to Day #180 and read about my Sunday adventures! This afternoon I sat in front of my laptop and forced myself to come up with some sort of summary of the day.

O forse NO!

Thursday 8 August 2013

Day #184

You know the time I used to dread Thursdays and coffee-making? Well, those days are long gone. Now I'm acing all pretty much all the coffee orders I get and turned out, cappuccinos are the easiest to make! I'm really proud of my barista skills :D Took me a while, but now I'm satisfied with the results. I still could do with some consistency in my Flat Whites, but I can manage this flaw.
Most of the time, when I'm behind the coffee machine, I think of my friends in my hometown who own a coffee shop and smile.

I spent a quite night in - Claire was working again, so no Salsa Night at the Cloudland. I'm not too heart broken about it, though.
There's this guy, Carlos, who's nice enough to dance with me even if I'm awful at it, but who keeps asking to hang out with me and doesn't get I'm not interested despite my telling him so in a pretty straightforward way.

Day #183

Cake's allarm went off at 5:45AM again this morning. Since she didn't wake up and kept it ringing I told her off, but I doubt she understood anything of what I told her. Anyway, I had the rest of the morning to rest and make up for lost sleep.

I decided to go to the markets only in the afternoon. I noticed the longer I stay there, the more I eat and the more I spend in food, so I thought of cutting down the hours. Let me tell you, it worked all right!!!! I only bought pastries from Madderz by Design stand and oranges and an eggplant at bargain prices, but somehow came home with free bag of pasta, basket of strawberries, apple strudel, haloumi and basil turkish bread and a soda. Not bad at all!

When I returned home with Sabrina, we found Paolo baking some pastries and had an hard time deciding which dessert to eat for dinner. We had Paolo's freshly baked chocolate parcels, in the end. I guess I'll work out a way to eat both the strudel and the other pastries tomorrow.. Ah, the sacrifices one must do sometimes.. :P

Day #182

Had breakfast with Jess at Max Brenner in Southbank this morning. We had a little catch up: she'll be leaving to Cairns in a fortnight!

I think I might be getting sick. Today after setting the restaurant I had to get a very sugary cup of coffee because I felt light headed and sleepy - it could have been due to the fact that Cake's alarm went off at five thirty this morning, but then I kept feeling unwell, so as soon as Davina arrived to the restaurant I told her I didn't feel 100% okay and I asked her to tell me/help me out if I got too slow..
Well, we had this table of fourteen people and - dammit! - I forgot to order the fourteenth main course. Anyway, considered the way I felt at the beginning of my shift, I'm relieved I didn't do anything worse.
Tomorrow I'll be off, so I'll just rest and take care of myself, maybe read a little bit, sleep, listen to Ed Sheeran. If I'm feeling well enough I might go to the Markets as well, see whether I can get any discount on fresh fruit or vegetables, say hi to Enzo..

By the way, I can't afford to be sick. Like, literally. Today is six months (!) I'm in Australia and my Medicare has expired!

Day #181

I had so many chores to do today: shopping, cleaning everything from my bed linen to the kitchen sink, my laundry.. There were so many things I made a list and I'm proud to say that, at the end of the day, there's only one item I did not tick off the list yet. Unfortunately, that is updating my blog entry for yesterday. Geesh, it's going to take me ages..

Alberto has moved out of the unit and Cake has started speaking to us again, but I think it's just a coincidence the two happened on the same day. :P
What else? I already bought my tickets for my last visit to Sydney and Melbourne in January right before leaving Australia. I'm so excited!!! I'll be seeing the world famous New Year's Eve fireworks in Sydney and maybe Phillip Island and the Twelve Apostles when I'm down South in Victoria. We'll see..

Day #180

Wow! What an eventful day! I'll procede for bullet points because I'm awful at summaries and I foresee a very long entry.

- This early morning, Claire and I, caught a taxi* to Kangaroo Point to go rock climbing. The Kangaroo Point Cliffs are popular among sporty people: the narrow parkland at the feet of the cliffs is perfect for jogging, the access to the river for those who love kayaking and other water sports is eased by many docks and of course, the cliffs themselves are equipped with everything you could wish for climbing.
We had a coupon for a two hour session with Riverlife, but ended up staying there for nearly three hours. Our instructors, Stu and Haymitch, showed us how to fix our harnesses and the basics of belaying. Claire and I paired up, each of us climbed twice, got plenty of bruises and hurt our already sore hands even more, but we had really good fun!!! Best part was reaching the top and realizing how badass we were for having done that :P It does give a boost to your confidence all right!
Sometimes, when your hands were sweaty and you were losing hold on the rock, you might have thought of giving up, but we would cheer the other up in turns and always find the strength to make it to the end! [Thank Goodness this was supposed to be short!]

- After that I was exhausted. We climbed up a set of very narrow and steep stairs and got to the parklands at the top of the cliffs. There we lied down on the grass and soaked up the sun. A guy stopped and asked Claire for her number! The way he did that was cute, but that's another story..

- Once back to the river, we got on the CityHopper, City-bound. In Queen St. Mall we had lunch with sushi rolls: yummy!!! We also had custard buns for dessert, because we were /totally/ going for healthy today. Crossed the river once again and stopped in Southbank for more sun and sleep. Good thing we though of bringing beach towels!

- Back in Hamilton we decided to go our separate ways to get ready for a party in New Farm. We met again at Biblos, this restaurant/pub in Portside, together with Rossella and Chicca - Claire's flatmates, and other colleagues of Claire's. We had drinks** and chips and then got a maxi-taxi to New Farm.
Ah! This taxi ride was fun. We weren't that drunk, but we started singing along with the radio, out loud, and the poor taxi driver drove like a mad man to get us out of his cab ASAP!!! From now on I'll always do this, if that helps saving up some money! lol

- The party was at some colleagues of Claire's new house - a shack, really.. They got a very good deal for it because in 6 months they'll bring it down, but still, roomy enough for the three of them and with a beautiful terrace on the starry night sky. We had small tapas, tequila shots and more beer and played some music. Turned out our music was a little bit too loud because we had a visit from the cops***. It was just 5 to midnight when they came, but given the following day would have been a Monday, the neighbours must have called to make sure to get a good night sleep.

- That was when we decided to walk to the Valley, in the chilly night air, to this place called The Family, where on Sunday nights they have gay night, which apparently is the most fun you can get. So, we get to the club, we're in line to show our IDs to the bouncer AND I DON'T HAVE MY ID! I mean, it's not in my purse and I don't really know whether I left it home or lost it on the way, but really praying I left it home. It was home.
The others got in, and despite it being only 1:30AM, I made my way back to Hamilton on yet another taxi. It'll be for next time.

*The SonofabEEEP got the taxi timer running even if Claire was still getting her coffee at a bar nearby. He only stopped it after I threatened to pay him for that and take another cab to our destination.
I admit not being used to taking taxis, never had in Italy nor anywhere else I've been, but the experience I have here in Australia is that if they can, taxi drivers'll slow down, get the wrong turn, miss deliberately the green light just to get more money.
**I'm getting used to drinking beer and wine as they're both cheaper than cocktails or shots here in Oz.
***First thought ''They are dressed up funny these friends of Claire's.''
Second thought ''Is this like in Magic Mike in which they turn out to be strippers?''
Let me tell you, they weren't strippers, and they didn't look anything like Channing Tatum.

Day #179

I finished working late tonight. Not that I'm complaining, I mean, it's good money, it's just that I'm so tired and tomorrow I have to wake up again at the brink of dawn: Claire and I we're going rock climbing at Kangaroo Point and the session starts at 8:30am. We need to be there fifteen to ten minutes before and since Kangaroo Point is on the other side of the river from us, we need to get on the ferry that leaves at 7:50 from Eagle St Pier.
We might just get on a taxi and drive up there. I do not really fancy waking up too early.. So, yeah, to keep it short, just two three things about today

- lunch was busy. Like very busy, but I'm proud of the way I managed it completely alone :D

- at dinner, two young people and their mother came to the restaurant: they were italians. As I had a hard time translating the specials of the day in Italian - their mom doesn't speak English - they wondered whether I spoke Italian as second language because clearly it wasn't good enough to be my native one. I'm a disappointment. But I mean, knowing something by heart in a language and having to translate it to another on the spot IS HARD.

- Davina gave us - Tunde and I - a talk. But it was a good one. Both parties were speaking: I told her I don't like nor think it necessary for her to double-guess my every motive, I mean, she admitted she might be a little bit paranoid, but I'm as clear as a glass and besides, I would never back-stab her when she gave me experience, money for my rent and training for what may come.

Day #178

Why am I this prone to self-harming? I mean, why do I always drag myself to write the blog entry for the day at these hours of the night?

Today I had breakfast with Claire. We stayed on Racecourse Rd and we ate at Vagelis, one of the direct competitors of my restaurant. The passion fruit cake I had was divine and Claire said her greek yogurt was really tasty as well!
After that we went to the library and printed out the vouchers for rock climbing this Sunday!! I'm so looking forward to that! We also did a little research on flights for the holiday we're planning over New Year's Eve. Both of us want to see Sydney's fireworks and I kind of want to visit Jess in Melbourne once again before leaving, so I might do both - Sydney and Melbourne - at the beginning of January, then spend two weeks in New Zealand and be back home in Italy by the beginning of February. We'll see..

Alberto got us muffins today :D He found a sort of job for the moment and also a place to move in with Mitsu. He'll be moving out of our unit this coming Sunday/Monday.
As for what concerns Cake, she hasn't slept home in the last couple of days and even when she was home, she just stayed shut in our room, under her blankets ignoring us all. Feels like I haven't seen/spoken with her in days!

Day #177

No Cloudland tonight. Claire was working and I didn't really fancy going there alone, even though by now I do know quite a few people that are always there on Thursday nights.

Today was a regular day at the restaurant. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to the end of my shift so that I could play and experiment with my cellphone, but I mean, that's kind of normal.. isn't it? New shiny toy with plenty of awesome features still to be unveiled.. There, I have already forgiven myself :P

I was also looking forward to watch The Hunger Games in HD. Oh my. Saying I'm craving for Catching Fire it's an understatement. I NEED IT NOW. Whatching the movie I realized there are still soooo many things left un-shown in the trailers that are bound to be in the movie and I can't wait for those scenes.. oh my. It's going to be epic.

By mid-November I should be out there in the outback working in a farm, but I swear, I'm coming back to civility, if anything, to go to the movies!!!

Tonight, after grilling the second half of the eggplant I used yesterday, I went out with Sabri for a scoop of ice cream at Milany on Racecourse Rd.

For the sake of my sanity, I will avoid speaking of my roommate attempting to clean the unit, I'd appreciate it if you could respect that.

Just a quick update: Australian Me has reached 8K views since it opened.
I'd like to thank you all, both those of you who have been reading from the begging, those who came along the way and those who started just now. Thank you :D

Grazie :D
